When many people file for unemployment, the number of those requiring UK unemployment benefits will also rise. It is there for a reason and the stigma that sometimes surrounds it should not hold you back from seeking help.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h2>What UK Unemployment Benefits Are Available?<\/h2>\n<h3>Jobseekers\u2019 Allowance (JSA)<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you become unemployed, your first port of call is JSA. This is available to you while you look for a full-time job or if you\u2019re working less than 16 hours a week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The three types of JSA are:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contribution-based<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018New style\u2019 JSA<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Income-based<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basic eligibility criteria for JSA:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18 or over <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under the pension age<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You work <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less than 16 hours per week<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">available for full-time work<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actively looking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for it<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not in full-time education<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not claiming Income Support\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do not have an illness or disability <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that prevents you from working<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Contribution-based JSA (CBJ)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contribution-based JSA is the best option as your savings, assets and partner\u2019s income won\u2019t affect the calculation or amount of your claim. You can claim CBJ, irrespective of your citizenship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To claim CBJ, you need to have:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worked for at least <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26 weeks earning more than the lower earnings limit <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(\u00a3120) per week for at least one of the last two years<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paid Class 1 National Insurance on 50 weeks\u2019 work <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the lower earnings limit during each of the 2 previous tax years<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, you can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only apply for CBJ if you get either<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severe disability premium<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Received or were <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">entitled to the severe disability premium in the last month <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still eligible for it<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>New-style JSA<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be eligible, you\u2019ll have to have worked as an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employee for at least 26 weeks earning more than \u00a3120 a week in at least one of the 2 previous tax years<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You must have paid Class 1 NI contributions for the last 2 to 3 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You also need to meet these criteria:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be 18 or over\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be under pension age<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not be in full-time education<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be available for work<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not be working at the moment, or working less than 16 hours a week<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not have an illness or disability which stops you from work<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live in England, Scotland or Wales\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">right to work in the UK<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must also <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actively be seeking full-time employment<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Income-based JSA<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universal credit has replaced income-based JSA <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for most people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only apply for income-based JSA if you either<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severe disability premium<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or you are entitled to it, or\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You got or you were <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">entitled to the severe disability premium within the last month<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and you are still eligible for it<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You also need to meet these eligibility criteria for income-based JSA:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be 18 or over\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be under pension age<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not be in full-time education<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be available for work<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not be working at the moment, or working less than 16 hours a week<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not have an illness or disability which stops you from work<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be single or have a partner that works <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less than 24 hours a week on average<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a316,000 or less in savings <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(this includes your partner\u2019s savings)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a partner and are claiming income-based JSA, you must make a joint claim. For further information, go to your nearest Jobcentre or Jobcentre Plus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>How Much JSA Will You Get?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every type of JSA pays the same personal allowance per week. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amount is dependent on your age:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18 to 24 &#8211; \u00a358.90<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25 or over &#8211; \u00a374.35<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you claim income-based JSA as a couple, you can get \u00a3116.80<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the exact amount you get depends on your circumstances, so it\u2019s impossible to provide an accurate number here. This becomes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a3100,000 if you are getting pension credit or any other qualifying benefit<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The SMI is a loan that you borrow from the Government to pay your interest on your existing mortgage or to pay for loans that you have taken out for certain repairs and improvements on your home. The payments go directly to your lender.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do not have to pay back the loan immediately <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 only once you sell your home or transfer ownership of it to another. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interest is added to your loan<\/span><span If there are any existing rights that you believe have been infringed, such as employer pension contributions, then your issue is with your previous employer, not the liquidator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are dismissed because of insolvency, then you may be owed:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">basic pay<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overtime\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maternity pay\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">holiday pay\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bonuses, commissions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">redundancy pay\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sick pay<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be able to recover some or all of the money you are owed depending on whether there are other creditors. In this case, you have a few options available:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to bring an action against your company, before they apply to be wound down, you should write to Companies House to inform them that you are owed money by the employer. However, only do this if you are prepared to take your case to a tribunal. These can incur heavy charges and should only be done if you are owed significant amounts of money.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a liquidator is appointed, you can use them to recover your money owed from the Redundancy Payments Service, if it is a debt covered by it. Alternatively, you can register as a creditor of the company, although it is unlikely that you are given priority in repossessing the debt.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If no liquidator is appointed, you cannot access the Redundancy Payments Service, but you can sue your employer to gain the money back. However, when claiming statutory redundancy pay, you can still claim it from the Service.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>Redundancy Pay<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We will provide an overview of what you can claim if you have been made redundant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two types of redundancy pay:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statutory redundancy pay <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 what the Government says that you are entitled to.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contractual redundancy pay <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 extra money on top of the statutory pay that is stipulated in your contract.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">receive redundancy pay if you:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have been <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employed for at least 2 years<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, continuously.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lost your job because there was a genuine need to make redundancies <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in your workplace.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are an employee <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 this includes part-time employees. Follow <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/employment-status\/employee\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this link<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to check your redundancy pay status if you are an employee.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are entitled to redundancy pay, you should receive this automatically and within a reasonable time frame. If your employer fails to or denies to pay you, then you can bring the matter to a court for them to decide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will not get statutory redundancy pay if you are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-employed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serving in the police or armed forces<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Crown servant or civil service officer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A share fisherman\/woman<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working for your immediate family as domestic staff<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An employee of a foreign government<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Working in your\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">job for less than two years<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may also lose your right to statutory redundancy pay if you:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turn down an alternative job offered by your employer without good reason,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attempt to leave before the job has ended,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are fired for gross misconduct before the job has ended.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where you cannot claim statutory redundancy pay, you may still be able to receive contractual redundancy pay \u2013 so always check your contract for further information.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>What is the Redundancy Pay You are Entitled to?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working out the amount of redundancy pay you are entitled to is complicated. Luckily, the Government has provided a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/calculate-your-redundancy-pay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calculator<\/a> to make the process easier. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To use it, you will need to know the following:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The date you were made redundant<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many full years you have worked for the employer (years of service)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your weekly pay before tax.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The redundancy pay is based on how long you have worked for your employer and your age when you worked for them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For each full year that you have worked for your employer, you get:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Half a week\u2019s pay if you are between the ages of 18 and 22<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One week\u2019s pay if you are between the ages of 22 and 40<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.5 weeks\u2019 pay if you are over the age of 41<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is subject to some limits:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maximum weekly amount you can get is \u00a3538<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, even if you earn more per week.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">length of service is capped at 20 years<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Backdating Your UK Unemployment Benefits<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Backdating benefits is when you claim UK unemployment benefits that you would have been eligible for in the past. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefits can be backdated in these circumstances:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You were <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">entitled to the benefit before the date on which you made the claim <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(a late claim). The time limit for backdating benefits is usually <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restricted to three months prior<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a decision is reversed or overruled, you may be eligible to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claim payment of any arrears of benefit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">successful appeal, you may be eligible to claim the arrears of benefit<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you do find yourself unemployed, there are many unemployment benefits in the UK available.
